Photofacial: The Latest Treatment for Melasma or Uneven Skin Tone

A Photofacial deals with the latest technology in laser skin resurfacing and skin rejuvenation, by safely emitting an intense pulsed light, also known as an IPL Photofacial, over targeted areas of the skin. By pulsating short blasts of high energy light just below your skin surface, the Photofacial stimulates your skin’s natural collagen production while at the same time destroys any melin that causes age spots and uneven skin tone.

To learn more about typical Photofacial results and what to expect after receiving a Photofacial treatment, Marisa Martino, skincare expert and owner of SKINNEY Medspa in NYC, answers some comonly asked questions.

What Does the Photofacial Treat?

The Photofacial is a type of Skin Resurfacing that can rid the skin of flushing, red facial veins, and irregular pigmentation. Many clients use the Photofacial to remove sun spots and to remove age spots. The Photofacial is also effective in getting rid of freckles. Lastly, SKINNEY Medspa clients use the Photofacial to treat rosacea and reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

What can you expect immediately after a Photo Facial?

After an IPL Photofacial you can expect slight redness/blotchiness for about 30 minutes.  After that, your complexion will quickly become more radiant ( sort of like a sun kissed glow). If you have hyper-pigmentation from the sun you can expect the dark spots to get darker for the next 3-5 days as the dark spots are being lifted to the skins surface. After a few more days, spots are faded or gone completely!

When will I start noticing the Photofacial results?

Your skin will look noticeably better in only 5-7 days!

How well does a Photofacial get rid of freckles?

It typically takes 5 sessions spaced once a month to fade dark marks and freckles from the sun. A Photofacial should completely remove newer sun damage, as it is more superficial than a freckle. Photofacials can fade freckles.

What other results from a Photofacial can I expect to see?

Your skin will glow after a Photofacial! A Photofacial also known as an IPL (Intense Pulsed Light), goes underneath your skin to gently heat up and stimulate collagen and elastin, leaving your skin more youthful than before. The Photofacial also reduces broken capillaries and redness.

Can I expect my Photofacial results to last permanently?

Photofacial results can be permanent by following the correct Photofacial aftercare procedures. One of the most important rules is to wear your sunblock! Sun block protects your Photofacials results and overall, sunblock can protect your skin from aging.

Does it matter what sunblock you use?

Yes! I recomend Elta, MD SPF 41 physical protection. It’s a broad spectrum, oil free, tinted and waterproof. It lasts longer than most SPF’s out there so you don’t have to reapply as often. Most of the time my clients say they wear SPF and still get sun damage. I tell them they must reapply throughout the day which, most of the time clients, have a hard time with.

For those clients that struggle with consistently reapplying their sunblock, I recomend SPF in a powder blush stick. It’s fast, easy and it works! You literally blush it on your face as you would normally blush. It’s a sheer powder so you get a beautiful natural look.

How long is the Photofacial treatment?
The IPL Photofacial treatment usually takes 15-20 minutes, and can easily be completed during your lunch break.
Do Photofacials hurt?

Photofacials are quick and painless! All you expect to feel is a pinch of warm heat followed by a light (similar to a camera flash.) Your eyes are protected by specific eye wear.

How often and how many Photo Facial sessions should I get for maximum results?

The way a Photofacial works is by slowly lifting the brown spots to the surface of your skin. Your skin has multiple layers, and some hyper-pigmentation can be fairly deep so it is important to come in once every 4-5 weeks for a series of 5-6 sessions. It is also more beneficial to stick to one laser specialist or MD for your Photofacials in NYC so that he or she can monitor the results and adjust settings to make sure you are receiving the most effective treatment.
