Micro Needling refers to the popular skin rejuvenation therapy that pricks the top layer of the dermis with small needles to stimulate the body’s healing response. Also known as Collagen Induction Therapy, Micro Needling delivers both immediate and long-term benefits. Shortly following your Micro Needling treatment, very superficial swelling causes the skin to plump up and look more radiant. The long-term benefits result from the production of collagen in response to the micro-injuries created by the pinpricks across the skin. Added collagen rejuvenates the skin, smoothing its texture, while improving the condition of various skin blemishes such as scarring from acne and fine lines and wrinkles.¹
As a stand-alone treatment, Microneedling delivers impressive skin benefits, but these effects can be greatly multiplied by coupling the treatment with topical serums, such as Hyaluronic Acid, or Plasma Facial (also known as a vampire facial.)

Dermaroller vs. Micropen
There are two main methods for conducting collagen induction therapy. The tradition method involves a Microneedling roller, or Dermaroller. However, technological advancements have led to the invention of the Microneedling pen, or MicroPen or Dermapen. Both the Dermaroller and Dermapen rejuvenate the skin using similar mechanisms, but the unique delivery system of each device carries its own advantages and disadvantages. Read on to find out which type of Micro Needling is best for you.
What is a Micropen?
The Dermapen is a Microneedling tool consisting of a pen shaped device, powered by a small motor, and equipped with a disposable tip consisting of thin, surgical-grade needles. Because Micro Needling pens are not manually powered like the Dermaroller, Dermapens allow the needles to penetrate vertically, with more consistency.

What is a Dermaroller?
A Dermaroller consists of a rolling drum attached to a handle. The drum is lined with small needles, typically 1.5 mm in size. When the drum is rolled across the skin, these needles puncture the top layer of skin, creating micro-wounds that trigger the body’s healing mechanisms.
Why the Micropen is Best
The MicroPen is a technological upgrade of the Dermaroller. The mechanicalized delivery system is far more consistent than manually powered Dermarollers. Dermapens also allow for controlled, vertical penetration of the subdermis. This is a noteworthy improvement compared to the Dermaroller, which is more susceptible to user error and tends to create tearing wounds, as it is drug across the skin.
In addition, the Micropen is better suited to rejuvenate skin in vulnerable or sensitive areas such as the eyes or on the chest.
