There are many factors that cause pores to look enlarged. But the important takeaway is how to shrink pores so the don’t look so big and prominent.  For expert insight, Redbook Mag interviews Dr. Hadley King of Skinney Medspa for the article “The Dos and Don’ts of Treating, Shrinking, and Hiding Pores” by Beth Shapouri.

How to Shrink Pores

Dr. Hadley King begins with some of skincare habits that may unintentionally make pores look bigger.

Avoid Over cleansing

Dr. Hadley Kings tells Redbook Mag that harsh cleansers, like acne washes, is not the answer for how to shrink pores because harsh cleansers “can dry out and irritate the skin, which can actually make pores look larger.” Her alternative: A gentler cleanser that strips the skin of grime and debris without drying your skin out.

When pores become clogged and morph into whiteheads or blackheads, it can be tempting to extract that gunk out of your pores yourself. And while “squeezing the gunk out of your skin can help” admits Dr. King, this is better left to a dermatologist or “a trained facialist will know how to do extractions gently without damaging your delicate tissue.”

Women wanting to know how to shrink pores can also be proactive, enlisting the expert services of a high end NYC skin and laser spa. Dr. King recomends that people opt for laser skin resurfacing if they really want to minimize the appearance of their pores. Laser skin resurfacing treatments such as Fraxel, which triggers your skin’s repair process,” explains Dr. King, causes pores to contract, shrinking their opening and making them appear smaller.

In addition, laser skin treatments, which are usually a part of professional acne treatment, not only shrink pore size, they can also eliminate the bacteria that gets clogged in pores, and trigger cellular renewal which causes the skin to slough off dead skin cells. This clears clogged pores, allowing the pore to constrict back to its normal size.

And of course, what dermatological advice would be complete without an urgent admonition to wear sunblock. Dr. King reiterates the ways sun exposure can make pores look larger, explain “Aging and sun damage contribute to pore size…As the skin loses its firmness, the pore may appear larger because of the lack of the support from the surrounding tissue.” So slather on the SPF.
