Love your smile with Botox
Reducing the appearance of wrinkles that form around the mouth is not the only way Botox can improve a person’s smile. The botulinum toxin can also be used to reduce the appearance of a “gummy smile,” medically known as excessive gingival, a genetic condition manifested by a short upper lip, small teeth, or excessive gum tissue. According to a NYC Botox specialists, featured in a New York Times article, at least 7% of men and 14% of women have “gummy smiles.”
Surgical solutions for a gummy smile
Prior to the discovery of Botox’s applicability as an oral remedy for gummy smiles, excessive gingival could only be corrected through invasive oral surgeries. Surgical options included a procedure which severed the upper lip from the muscle used to elevate it, a procedure that lengthened the teeth by cutting away excess gum tissue, and in extreme cases, a procedure that repositioned the upper jaw. These procedures were notorious for being painful and expensive (i.e. $15,000).
Obviously Botox, consisting of non-invasive injections which are clinically proven to be safe and effective for treating gummy smiles, became the popular treatment of choice in lieu of these invasive oral surgeries.
How does Botox help a gummy smile?
Botox effectively treats “gummy smiles” by reducing excessive lip elevation. During the Botox procedure, the toxin is injected directly into the “elevator” muscle of the upper lip, which weakens the muscle’s ability to contract, or raise up too high, when smiling, thus preventing the over exposure of gum line.
Using Botox to reduce a gummy smile lasts about 4 to 6 months.
