CoolSculpting: Now FDA approved to Tighten Neck Skin: Non-Surgical Neck Lift

Allergan, the makers of CoolSculpting, eagerly announced CoolSculpting’s recent FDA clearance to improve the appearance of lax tissue in the double chin, by toning and tightening neck skin, offering patients a double solution to a comon problem area. According to a consumer survey sponsored by the American Society of Dermatological Surgery (ASDS,) 85% of men and women who are considering cosmetic procedures are “bothered by excess fat on any part of the body” with 70% of those consumers saying they are particularly bothered by “excess fat under the chin/neck and skin.” After excess fat, 60% of consumers are bothered by sagging facial skin, including lax skin under the chin and around the neck,” explaining the popularity of the surgical neck lift to tighten neck skin.

With the latest FDA clearance, CoolSculpting using the CoolMini applicator now offers a promising solution that targets both major concerns of submental fat and lax skin under the chin. In a press release, David Nicholson, Chief Research and Development Officer at Allergan, expressed “We are pleased this patient concern can successfully be addressed by CoolSculpting through a non-invasive approach, and furthermore improve the appearance of lax tissue in the treated area” by tightening neck skin.

What is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is a revolutionary fat reduction treatment that reduces stubborn bulges with incisions or downtime, hailing this non-invasive procedure as a non-surgical alternative to liposuction. CoolSculpting works because of a scientifically proven process known as cryolipolysis (cryo = freeze, lipo = fat, lysis = cell death.) During a CoolSculpting treatment stubborn bulges are exposed to controlled cooling, effectively freezing a portion of underlying fat cells without harming surrounding skin or tissue. Freezing the fat cells causes the cell to rupture, triggering apoptosis, or the body’s process for metabolizing and eliminating destroyed cells.

CoolSculpting Using the CoolMini for Double Chins

Since its original FDA clearance for reducing fat from the flanks and abdomen, the makers of CoolSculpting have developed applicators specifically designed to contour to specific body parts, expanding the areas that can be targeted with this innovative fat freezing technology. In 2015, CoolSculpting announced the FDA clearance of the CoolMini, an applicator designed to fit to the submental area, specifically for reducing double chin fat.

CoolSculpting Before and After Pictures*

CoolSculpting before and after pictures reveal how effectively the CoolMini applicator can reduce submental fullness, more comonly known as a double chin. CoolSculpting before and after pictures also reveal the unintended benefit of skin tightening, with patients not only seeing a reduction in submental fullness but toning and tightening neck skin.  Results may vary but these CoolSculpting before and after pictures depict real patients, who actually underwent the treatment and demonstrate typical CoolSculpting results.*

CoolSculpting Scientifically Shown to Improve Skin Laxity & Tighten Neck Skin

The FDA clearance was won, in part, by results following an 18-week clinical study that revealed, “77 percent of patients showed improved appearance of lax tissue and 75 percent of patients reported their chin looked more toned following treatment.”

This follows similar findings published in the Journal of Dermatological Surgery. One study, titled “Cryolipolysis and skin tightening” began when researchers analyzing CoolSculpting before and after pictures were “struck by the noticeable skin tightening shown in clinical photographs.” This observation led to a survey conducted on CoolSculpting patients “to assess changes to skin texture and laxity” and evaluating “subjects undergoing a clinical study for lateral thigh cryolipolysis…for changes to skin texture, laxity, and cellulite.”

The results revealed “Independent assessments by patients and investigators found consistent improvement in skin texture and laxity for treatments to the outer thighs, abdomen, arms, and back.” This led researchers to conclude, “This clinical evaluation demonstrates consistent improvement in skin texture, laxity, and cellulite after cryolipolysis as independently assessed by patients and investigators.”
