How Long Does CoolSculpting Results Last?
Most people who are wondering if CoolSculpting may be a viable solution for reducing stubborn fat pockets that resist diet and exercise and often accumulate as belly fat, thigh fat, or as a double chin, want to know how long does CoolSculpting results last? It’s a very understandable inquiry. Anyone who has lost weight knows how quickly they can gain it back. But that highlights a very important distinction between fat reduction and weight loss. To better understand the difference between these two methods for looking slimmer, it is important to understand the nature of fat cells.
Fat Reduction vs. Weight Loss
After puberty, the amount of fat cells within your body stays more or less the same. Fat cells can shrink and expand, but they cannot divide or replicate. This means that when you lose weight, your fat cells shrink. They don’t go away, they just get smaller. And they have the potential to return to their normal size (or expand even larger) if you gain weight back.
Fat Reduction is different. Popular fat reduction procedures, like liposuction or CoolSculpting remove fat cells from the body. Once fat cells are removed they cannot “grow back,” and your body doesn’t replace them with new fat cells.
How Does CoolSculpting Remove Fat Cells from the Body
Technically, it doesn’t. At least not like Liposuction, where a sharp cannula is inserted through a surgical incision so it can stab the fat and suck up the loosened pieces through a tube and out of the body². CoolSculpting uses a far less invasive process to reduce fat cells, working in collaboration with the body’s natural metabolic processes. CoolSculpting uses a scientifically validated mechanism known as Cryolipolysis, which exposes fat cells to controlled cooling, essentially freezing fat cells to death without harming the skin or surrounding tissue. Once fat cells are frozen and destroyed the body’s immune system collects the dead fat cells, metabolizing them and filtering them out of the body as waste, effectively eliminating fat cells from your body. Does Fat Cells Grow Back After CoolSculpting. No. Just like liposuction, once these fat cells are removed from the body, they do not grow back.

Maintaining CoolSculpting Results
One very important caveat: fat reduction procedures eliminate some fat cells, not all fat cells from the treatment area. Clinical studies reported that, on average, patients treated with CoolSculpting saw a 25% reduction of fat cells from the treated area. While one area can be treated numerous times with CoolSculpting to magnify results for optimal fat reduction, it does not remove all the fat cells from the treatment area. The fat cells that are left behind still have the potential to expand if you gain weight and can obscure the results of your fat reduction treatments. So it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle that limits excessive weight gains after receiving CoolSculpting or Liposuction.
Is CoolSculpting Permanent?
So back to the main question, are CoolSculpting results permanent. Theoretically, yes. However, because Cryolipolysis is a relatively recent discovery, there are not many clinical studies reporting longitudinal data on how long CoolSculpting results last. Perhaps the study with the longest span of reference was published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology in June of 2016. This case study observed 2 male subjects who received “unilateral flank Cryolipolysis treatments” or in layman terms the two subjects got CoolSculpting to only one of their love handles. Only treating one love handle allowed the opposite love handle to act as a control for better analysis down the road. 9 years after their initial treatment, their CoolSculpting results were analyzed to see if the initial fat reduction was still apparent after nearly a decade. The study concluded that even with moderate weight fluctuations, “local reductions in flank fat have significant longevity in these subjects and suggest that results from cryolipolysis may be very long-lasting.”
There is certain to be future longitudinal studies composed of a much larger group of subjects. But from the data we have, and in consensus with the scientific community, it is safe to say that CoolSculpting results last a very long time, if not permanently, and the best way to maintain your slimmer appearance after CoolSculpting is through healthy living.
