The CoolSculpting Procedure: What to Expect

Share:

CoolSculpting is the world’s most popular non-invasive procedure for reducing stubborn fat bulges. SKINNEY Medspa, NYC’s premiere CoolSculpting provider discusses the CoolSculpting procedure, step by step, and answers comon questions patients have when choosing to reduce fat and contour their body shape with this revolutionary treatment.

Your First Step in Reducing Fat: Schedule a Free Consultation.

During your free consultation, you will meet one-on-one with a CoolSculpting Clinician from SKINNEY Medspa to discuss the CoolSculpting procedure. Your clinician will take the time to learn about areas of your body you are concerned with and answer any questions you may have. Your clinician will evaluate those areas and provide clinical assessments. If CoolSculpting is a viable solution for helping you reach your ideal body shape and contour, your clinician will discuss different treatment options. The two of you will design a treatment plan specifically customized to your individual concerns, body type, lifestyle and expectations.  Your clinician will also educate you on what to expect prior to, during, and after your CoolSculpting treatments.

CoolSculpting Treatment Plans

Many patients have more than one area of stubborn fat they want to get rid of. CoolSculpting is a versatile fat reduction treatment that is FDA approved for addressing many areas of concern, including belly fat, flank fat (typically known as muffin tops or love handles,) inner thigh fat, fat on the outer thighs, double chins, bra bulges, upper arm fat, fat bulges around the knees, and more. During your free consultation, your CoolSculpting clinician from SKINNEY Medspa will discuss various options for each area of your body you would like to contour, enabling you to make an informed decision on the specifics of your treatment plan.

Your specific treatment plan will depend on which areas of the body you want to address. Some areas require a single, one hour CoolSculpting session. Other areas of the body may be treated additional times for further fat reduction.

How Much Does CoolSculpting Cost?

CoolSculpting cost depends on the area being treated and how many treatments that area will undergo. During your free consultation, your clinician will discuss your various treatment options and the different costs of each. Your clinician can also discuss a payment plan that fits with your budget.

How Long will Your CoolSculpting Treatment take?

If CoolSculpting is right for you, your clinician will schedule your first CoolSculpting treatment. CoolSculpting treatments typically take an hour. Many patients come in for their CoolSculpting treatment during their lunch breaks. However, your appointment may be longer considering the location being treated, and how many areas being treated. Your clinician will provide a reliable estimation of your appointment time when scheduling your first session.

How Does CoolSculpting Reduce Unwanted Fat?

The CoolSculpting treatment exposes unwanted fat to controlled cooling. Since fat cells are more sensitive to cold than other cells in your body, controlled cooling can crystalize fat cells (essentially freezing them to death) without harming your skin or surrounding tissues. Once destroyed, your fat cells are gradually picked up by the mechanisms of your immune system and removed from the body as waste. This entire process is known as cryolipolysis.

Preparing the Treatment Area

One the day of your CoolSculpting session, we will take photos of the treatment areas prior to your CoolSculpting session. These photos help your clinician monitor your treatment and allow you to see your transformation over the months.  Because CoolSculpting uses the body’s lymphatic system to methodically remove the frozen fat cells, your fat reduction occurs gradually, typically reaching its apex 8-16 weeks after your initial treatment. CoolSculpting before and after pictures reveal the dramatic contour and fat reduction of the treatment area.

Your CoolSculpting clinician may evaluate your treatment area prior to the procedure and make markings to guide in placing the applicator. This helps your clinician determine the most ideal positioning to apply the CoolSculpting applicator for the best fat reduction results.

Attaching the CoolSculpting Applicator

Your CoolSculpting treatment takes place in a private patient room. During your procedure you may sit or lay on a comfortable treatment bed. Your esthetician will position you on the treatment bed, ensuring you are relaxed and comfortable. Once you are ready to begin treatment, your clinician will place a cooling pad or cooling gel over the treatment area. Once the pads are in place, your clinician will then attach the CoolSculpting applicator to the treatment area. The cooling applicator typically consists of two parallel cooling plates. When the applicator is turned on, a vacuum mechanism draws the tissue from the treatment area in between the two cooling plates. These cooling plates deliver controlled freezing to the treatment area for an allotted amount of time.

During Your CoolSculpting Treatment

While we aim to provide you with the best results possible from your CoolSculpting procedure, your experience during the procedure is also very important to us at SKINNEY Medspa. Tea or coffee is available during your procedure and our clean and spacious treatment rooms are equipped with Netflix and APPLE TV for your entertainment. Many patients feel so relaxed that they nap through the procedure. Other patients pull out their laptops and work during their CoolSculpting session. We can also place outside food orders if you are being treated during your lunch break or just want a snack. Your comfort is a priority to us, so please don’t hesitate to ask your clinician for anything that may make you feel more relaxed.

Removing the CoolSculpting Applicator

When the treatment is complete, your clinician will remove the CoolSculpting applicator. Once the applicator is removed, you may be surprised to see a hardened area of skin that has conformed to the shape of the applicator. This is perfectly normal. Your clinician will take a few minutes to massage this area once the applicator is removed. This will help return your skin to its normal shape, and will further aid in the efficacy of the CoolSculpting treatment.

Depending on your treatment plan, your clinician may then move on to treating another area of your body. Or, your treatment may be complete after only one session.

What Does the CoolSculpting Procedure Feel Like?

CoolSculpting is a non-invasive procedure that requires no prescription pain medication* or anesthesia. Still, one of the main questions patients have before their first CoolSculpting session is if the procedure will hurt.

Does CoolSculpting Hurt?

Most patients find the CoolSculpting procedure to be relatively painless. Still, everybody’s pain tolerance is different, and some patients may find certain parts of the Cool Sculpting procedure to be uncomfortable. However, clinical studies measuring patient experience during cryolipolysis procedures concluded the coolsculpting “procedure was well-tolerated, with 89% of respondents reporting a positive perception of treatment duration and 96% reporting minimal to tolerable discomfort.” – Safety, Tolerance, and Patient Satisfaction With Noninvasive Cryolipolysis. Here at SKINNEY Medspa, we strive to ensure our patients are as comfortable as possible during their CoolSculpting treatments. Our CoolSculpting clinicians are also certified and experienced, ensuring you receive the highest standard of care possible, which significantly effects your experience during the procedure and post treatment side effects.

What does Cool Sculpting Feel like?

If your treatment area requires a CoolSculpting applicator with a vacuum mechanism, you may feel some tugging, pulling or slight pinching. As one might expect when freezing fat, the treatment area may feel cold during the CoolSculpting procedure. Cold sensations typically occur at the beginning of the treatment, once the CoolSculpting machine is first turned on. Most patients describe the cold sensation to be comparable to an ice pack placed on the skin. Other patients describe a tingling sensation at the treatment area. This is perfectly normal, and typically goes away quite quickly, usually within the first ten minutes of treatment.

After the applicator is removed, the clinician will massage the treatment area for two minutes. Some patients report tenderness during the massage.

What to Expect After Your CoolSculpting Procedure?

Usually, the treatment area is red immediately following the procedure. The redness is normal, and typically last a few hours to a few days. CoolSculpting typically requires no down time. Most patients return to their regular activities immediately following the procedure.*

CoolSculpting Side Effects

CoolSculpting side effects are rare. Still some patients may experience some minor tingling, tenderness, numbness, or swelling around the treatment area. These side effects are usually minimal and temporary. Your clinician will discuss any potential side effects you may experience following a CoolSculpting procedure.*

When Will I See Results?

While results may vary, typically after a CoolSculpting treatment the body begins the process of gradually reducing the dead fat cells. You may begin to see results as soon as 3 weeks following your treatment. The most dramatic results are seen after 2 months and your body may continue to dispose of treated fat cells for 4 to 6 months after your CoolSculpting treatment.*

How Much Fat will be Reduced?

While results may vary, CoolSculpting patients may expect to lose an inch off of their waste line* when treating the belly. Significant reductions in fat are consistent, regardless of treatment area or applicator. These results are validated in numerous clinical studies including one titled “Cryolipolysis For Noninvasive Body Contouring” that reported: “In clinical studies, cryolipolysis was shown to reduce subcutaneous fat at the treatment site by up to 25% after one treatment.” *¹
